Hampton City Council Explores Digital Infrastructure Development

In a recent work session, the Hampton City Council received an informational briefing on digital infrastructure and data centers. The presentation, delivered by Ried Wagner of the Southeastern Institute of Research, aimed to provide council members with a foundational understanding of data centers and their implications for the community.

Wagner emphasized that the briefing was purely informational, with no immediate plans for data center development in Hampton. He outlined various types of data centers and discussed public perceptions regarding their potential benefits and challenges, including concerns about power and water usage, public safety, and noise levels.

Mayor Jimmy Gray noted, “I don’t think we’re there yet,” indicating that while the city is exploring the topic, no decisions have been made. The council’s proactive approach reflects a commitment to staying informed about emerging technologies and their potential impact on the community.

As Hampton continues to assess its digital infrastructure needs, community input will be essential in shaping policies that align with the city’s strategic vision and priorities.
